BOOK LAUNCH- “THIRUKKURAL – A GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE LEARNING”

TRC has together with its 32 Affiliated Organisations been actively involved in uplifting the educational, economic and social status of the Tamils in Singapore and promoting the cultural values of our Community.

As part of its efforts in enhancing the social aspects of the Tamils in Singapore TRC published a book on “THIRUKKURAL – A GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE LEARNING” on 6 January 2007.

This book is an interpretation of ‘Thirukkural’ in simple English. The purpose being to share with a wider community, how the maxims can be utilized to enhance personal integrity, effectiveness and leadership qualities. In short, this book takes the age-old ‘Thirukkural’ into today’s world and makes it digestible for all ages.

The author Mr S Ratnakumar obtained his tertiary education at the University of Birmingham and University of Bradford, UK. He has been a lecturer at two of the Polytechnics in Singapore. Currently he conducts lectures in Business Management.

The book was launched on Saturday 6th January 2006 at 6.00 pm by our Minister for Education and 2nd Minister for Finance, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, at the MDIS UniCampus, 501 Stirling Road. In addition, two guest speakers Prof E. Valentine Daniel, University of Columbia, New York and Dr K Veeramani, President of Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology, India, also spoke on the importance and relevance of ‘Thirukkural’ for today. The book launch was preceded by a short reception from 5.00 pm onwards.

TRC is happy to note that more than 500 books were sold at the launch. All proceeds of the sales and donations will go towards TRC’s Kandasamy Education Trust Fund. This fund presents bursaries to over 100 needy children annually and awards Excellence Awards to the top 5 Tamil Students in each of the PSLE, GCE ‘O’ & ‘A’ level examinations.
