TAMIL MURASU 75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Launched in 1935 by the late Thamizhavel G. Sarangapani, Tamil Murasu is Singapore’s only Tamil Language newspaper. Tamil Murasu is the main information source for the Tamil-speaking Indian community with its coverage of wide-ranging news, from current affairs to local and foreign news as well as the latest in sports and entertainment, in addition to its strong coverage on news from the Indian community and the sub-continent. The newspaper has established itself as a voice for the Tamil-speaking community in Singapore.

It will be celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2010 and a book will also be launched to commemorate the occasion. Tamil Murasu will also be launching a new mast-head to commemorate the occasion.

Tamil Murasu and the contribution of the Tamils to nation building go hand in hand. The Tamil community has played an integral part in the nation’s struggle towards independence and in the years after in nation-building. To celebrate the occasion, and thank those who had sacrificed and struggled towards our nation and create an awareness of the history and achievements of Tamil Murasu and the Tamils, the celebration committee plans to hold a concert during which the commemorative book will be launched. More than 1,600 people are expected to attend the celebration.

President S R Nathan will be gracing the occasion as Guest of Honour. A number of national and community leaders will also be present as special guests.

The concert will showcase numerous local artistes and talents and depict the contributions of the Tamils and Tamil Murasu towards nation-building. It will also demonstrate the confidence of the community in the face of the new global challenges. Special items have been commissioned to reinforce the theme of nationalism and nation building in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment.
